Will your AED work when you need it most?

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- AED's are popping up everywhere.

"We're seeing them in every business, across the state, across the county," Sean Piasecki, Eastern Medical Support President said.

From where we work to where we work out, a simple to use machine that combined with CPR can double a heart attack victim’s chance of survival.

"If they can shock the victim within three to five minutes the survival rate jumps to 75%," Piesecki said.

"It just makes you feel better knowing you could do something if something happened," Lizz Close, Quandt's Inside Sales Manager said.

Two years ago Quandt's Foodservice in Amsterdam picked up an AED. With a hundred plus employees, managers thought they were buying piece of mind.

But experts say just having an AED may not be enough and that's something many salesmen don't tell you.

Will your AED work when you need it most? Automatic External Defibrillators are becoming more and more common and can greatly increase the chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest. But as our Mark Repasky tells us some may only be providing a false sense of security and fail when needed most.
"Obviously we had to check it to make sure it was okay but we didn't know we had to monitor it in any other way," Close said.

AEDs can actually require quite a bit of maintenance.

Batteries can die and pads can expire.

So without regular checks, that box on the wall can be providing a false sense of security.

"Where we're finding most corporations in trouble, they don't have a plan in place. So when it's time to use that unit it fails because nobody is checking it every 30 days," Piasecki said.

Every 30 days may sound tedious but Piasecki said designing a plan to check your AED is the only way you'll know it will pass.

Company's like E.M.S. can help you out by keeping track of expiration dates on-line and sending email reminders.

"I get an email to check the pad, check the expiration date. That brings it to mind. Otherwise we would never check it," Close said.

A simple look that takes little time, but is the only way to provide real piece of mind.
